When most people think of yoga, they often imagine a mat and challenging poses that require flexibility and balance. However, there is a much more accessible form of yoga: Chair Yoga. Suitable for all ages and physical abilities, it allows people to enjoy the benefits of yoga while honoring their individual needs and limitations and this is why I started filming Chair Yoga videos for my YouTube channel which are enjoyed by many people of all ages and background. But first let's define what is Chair Yoga?
Chair Yoga is an adaptation of traditional yoga postures performed with the support of a chair. The chair provides stability and security, making the practice accessible to beginners, older adults, individuals recovering from injury, or anyone seeking a gentle approach to movement.
This style of yoga preserves the fundamental principles of yoga: conscious breathing, body awareness, gentle strengthening, joint mobility, and relaxation.
One of the greatest strengths of Chair Yoga is its accessibility. It is particularly beneficial for:
Chair Yoga like any other type of Yoga reminds us that yoga is not about performance - it is about listening to and caring for ourselves.
Gentle movements help maintain joint flexibility and reduce stiffness associated with aging or a sedentary lifestyle.
Even while seated, many poses engage the muscles of the back, legs, arms, and core. The strengthening work is gradual and adaptable to individual needs.
Conscious breathing combined with mindful movement helps calm the nervous system. Just a few minutes of practice can promote relaxation and emotional balance.
Certain standing postures performed with the support of a chair help develop stability, confidence, and coordination.
Stretching and gentle movement stimulate blood flow and can create a pleasant feeling of lightness and vitality throughout the body.
Chair Yoga can be practiced almost anywhere: at home, in the workplace, in community centres, or during group classes. Even a short 10- to 20-minute session can provide noticeable benefits.
Here are examples of simple Chair Yoga practices include:
More and more organisations are incorporating Chair Yoga into their workplace wellness programs. This practice helps reduce muscular tension associated with long hours at a desk, improves focus and concentration, and supports effective stress management.
Just a few minutes of movement and mindful breathing can positively transform the workday and contribute to overall well-being.
Chair Yoga reminds us that it is never too late to begin a gentle and beneficial physical activity. Regardless of age, physical condition, or previous experience, everyone can find a place within this supportive practice.
By taking a few moments each day for mindful movement and conscious breathing, it is possible to cultivate greater comfort, vitality, and inner calm.
Chair Yoga is not a “simplified” version of yoga - it is a fully adapted practice that focuses on what truly matters: presence, breath, and well-being.
