Unravelling the mysteries of the sacred Amazonian tree frog

What is Kambo?

Kambo is a traditional Amazonian indian ceremony that has been adapted to modern medicine. It uses the naturally occurring secretion of the Giant Green Monkey Tree Frog, and has the rare distinction of being promoted as both a scientific medicine as well as an alternative therapy medicine for the body and soul. The active substances within Kambo medicine are bioactive peptides known for their anti-inflammatory abilities, boost to the immune system, as well as their positive psycho-active properties.

The term can simultaneously refer to several related elements:

· The Giant Green Monkey Tree Frog

· The toxic secretions of the frog

· The medicinal properties derived from those secretions

· The traditional ceremony where this Kambo is applied to openings in the skin

The origin of Kambo

The Giant Green Monkey Tree frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor) is also commonly known as the blue and yellow frog, giant leaf frog and the waxy monkey tree frog.

As its name suggests, it’s somewhat large and mostly green, measuring between 4” to 5” long, with an off-white to cream underside and patches of white spots with dark borders. Its natural habitat covers the upper Amazon rainforest.

It spends most of its life high up in the trees and moves about at night. While the frog has no natural predators and is not endangered (It’s designated as “Least Concern” by the IUCN endangered species database), their habitat is under siege by human encroachment.

What makes the Giant Green Monkey Tree Frog unique are the bioactive peptides (deltorphin, deltorphin I, deltorphin II and dermorphin, among others) that it secretes through its skin.

Kambo ceremony

Also known as the Kambo cleanse or ritual, the Kambo ceremony is where the secretions of the frog are applied through small breaks in the skin called gates. These breaks are often laid out in a simple line or circular design on the shoulder, back, ankle or leg.

As the natural Kambo frog secretions are dried after harvesting, water is mixed with the medicine and formed into small globules. They’re then placed on the skin breaks where the medicine enters the lymphatic system relatively quickly.

While the initial reactions are discomforting in different ways to different people, the after-effects include a feeling of increased strength, heightened senses and a stronger immune system.

Kambo’s Modern Medical History

Vittorio Erspamer, an Italian pharmacologist and chemist best known for identifying serotonin, was the first scientist to analyse Kambo in a lab. He found that the frog’s secretions contain a ‘fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications, unequalled by any other amphibian’. He primarily studied the effects of opioid peptides in the frog’s secretions and how the native indian populations applied and used these to create euphoric and analgesic effects.

Some of these peptides have been found to heightened sensory perception, increase stamina and physical strength and generally boost the capacity to manage pain and stressful situations. Other medicinal properties of this secretion are its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral effects and ability to heal infections. Due to the presence of bioactive peptides, Kambo is one of the strongest natural antibiotics and anaesthetics found in nature.

Kambo Testimonials

Rob K, Buckinghamshire

I've now been to see Christel 3 times for Kambo treatments. They just keep getting better and better. I feel like a weight has been lifted from me and my energy and outlook have been much improved. I also have MSN as it helps cleanse really efficiently and easily. Please do speak to Christel and see how she and Kambo can help you. I recommend Christel highly.

When to use Kambo?

Kambo is known as 'The Vaccine of the Forest' and is one of the most powerful, natural antibiotics and anaesthetics found in the world.  It is one of the strongest ways to empower our immune systems.

The indigenous tribes say the main reason to receive the natural vaccine is to remove ‘Panema’, which is the thick cloud of haziness that sits on top of the energy field of a person. ‘Panema’ can also be translated as bad luck, laziness, depression or confusion.  It is the state of being that attracts discomfort and disease. Kambo is said to remove ‘Panema’ and bring the person back to his/her natural state of perfect harmony and highest physical, emotional and spiritual potential; reconnecting one to self.  According to the tribes, when nothing is going right in your life, this is the right moment to take Kambo.

As well as this energetic clearing effect, Kambo also has potent physical benefits. Kambo is used as a traditional shamanic medicine to gain strength, maintain or regain health and to provide immunity. The tribes often apply it before hunting in order to increase strength, improve vision and lend the hunters a ‘magical’ ability to locate prey. It is also used to cleanse the body of just about any illness, such as headaches, allergies, thyroid problems, arthritis, infections, addiction to pharmaceuticals, drugs, nicotine, alcohol and so on. The tribes also use it for rainforest-specific issues such as malaria, snake and spider bites.

It is highly recommended to receive 3 applications
of Kambo within one moon cycle (28 days) in order to achieve
the full potential and for longer beneficial effects.

The Spiritual Power of Kambo

On a spiritual level, Kambo helps to integrate our mind with our heart and re-align our chakras.  It is also believed that it assists us in raising our prayers to 'The Great Spirit' and is a multi-dimensional healer.

In the shamanic worldview, we gain assistance from plant and animal spirit allies. In the case of Kambo, we are allying with the Spirit of a Frog that has a very strong immunity to predators. Some believe the Spirit of Phyllomedusa bicolour lends us a similar power of being nearly impervious to predatory energy – physically, mentally and energetically. As the DNA signature of the frog is introduced into our body, its spirit gifts us with the power to cast off parasitic energies that prey on body, mind and spirit. Once free of these energies, it is common to see natural health returned. Synchronicities and good luck are also common effects after Kambo. Many people report having synchronistic visitations by frogs in the days just before or after receiving Kambo.

Kambo’s Natural Intelligence

Kambo works with your intention and what is most needed in the moment. Upon receiving the medicine it scans your body and goes where it’s most needed. Working with the Frog Spirit is a very personal relationship and will vary every time, depending upon your intention and what the spirit is calling for. Be prepared to experience great changes in your life!

This Medicine is Safe and Legal to use by trained practitioners.

Please note these recommendations are purely advice from my own experience in working with this medicine and those who have taught me. Should you want to venture into the experience of this medicine you should always without exception consult an experienced practitioner in your area, or contact me to arrange a circle. Please do not administer this medicine to yourself or anyone else without extensive training and tutorship of shaman / teacher.

I would like to begin with the fundamental principle or question: ask yourself the need behind the desire to experience Kambo. This deep introspection into the nature of well-being is best sourced from intention. This is the fundamental key to our own healing and conscious awareness.

Secondly, your ability to surrender, feel safe and let go of control is vital in allowing this medicine to work at its deepest levels within you and in the context of releasing that which no longer serves you. It is up to you to let go of the mental and emotional levels to maximise the synergistic effect. Once you decide and are committed to your own transformation, you can then consider the more practical needs of attending a ceremony or one-to-one session with a practitioner.

Please be honest with your administer / practitioner. By making a full disclosure of any medications or serious medical conditions that you may have, you protect both yourself and the practitioner. Please take the time to share and to let the practitioner know of your special needs prior to the ceremony.

Diet Preparation - Day before and on the day

  • Set your intentions.
  • Make sure you do not have anything to eat for a minimum of 10 hours before taking Kambo.
  • You are permitted to drink water during the 10-hour fast but not excessively.
  • You cannot consume alcohol or drug substances for 24hrs before or after the ceremony.
  • 1.5 to 2 litres of fresh room temperature spring water / non alkaline that includes no use of lemons or limes in your water. This water will be sipped on the morning of and right before the application of the medicine.
  • I recommend the day before eating light / fresh steamed veggies, soups, fruits, quinoa, fish or chicken. Try and avoid a lot of sugar, heavy starches, or really fatty foods if possible.
  •  NO COLONICS, ENEMAS, LIVER FLUSHES, OR WATER FASTING* WITHIN 3 DAYS (BEFORE AND AFTER) OF TAKING KAMBO

*With the exception of the 10-12 hours you will fast, drinking only water, before your Kambo treatment.

  • During the ceremony: Meditating with the breath is the best preparation for a Kambo ceremony. Breathe in and invite the spirit of the medicine into you, exhale and surrender your ego, your weight, your toxicity. Breathe in and soften to the medicine, breathe out and let go.
  • Allow yourself 2 to 3 hours for treatment and recovery, ideally having the rest of the day off from work or stressful obligations.
  • You should wear comfortable clothing and in layers so it is easy to apply the medicine and due to changes in temperatures of your body during the course of the experience (and a change of clothing in case yours gets soiled during treatment).
  • A pad, pillow, or bolster to rest on to insure relaxation.
  • A blanket in case you want to rest or lie down after the session is done.
  • A contact lens case with solution added (if you choose to receive Sananga eye drops and wear contact lenses).
  • A roll of toilet paper or a box of tissues will be a necessity in this experience.
  • A hair tie or headband for people with long hair.
  • Menstruating women will need to be aware that their flow will increase for up to 3 days after taking Kambo medicine.
  • Some light snacks of your choice for the completion of the ceremony: fresh fruit, probiotics (sauerkraut) to restore good bacteria, coconut water to restore electrolytes and soup would be recommended after Kambo.

How is Kambo Administered?

The medicine is applied to the skin after small superficial burns are made with a red-hot ember vine stick (similar to incense).  Only the top layer of the skin is gently burned. Traditionally, the points are placed on the lower right leg for women, and men usually have their points placed on their upper left arm.  There are no right or wrong places for the point placements, so it is a good idea to think about where you would like them ahead of time.
Please keep in mind that the area chosen must not be disturbed during treatment, as the medicine must remain where it is placed to be effective.   Also, it is forbidden to place gates on certain parts of the body like genitals.
The resin from The Giant Green Monkey Tree Frog is formed into small bead-sized pellets and applied to the burns. The quantity of points used depends on the number of times that the person has already received treatment, the reason for the application, physical condition and overall assessment by the practitioner based on her / his knowledge.

What to Expect During Your Kambo Experience

A typical Kambo group ceremony lasts 3.5-4 hours (private sessions last about 2.5 hours). The time spent in the peak of the cleansing and purgative process can be as short as 10 minutes and as long as a couple of hours. Kambo is a very physical experience which involves a feeling of heat in the body usually followed by vomiting and sometimes evacuating from the intestines as the body purges toxins from various organs. Once the Kambo is applied to the skin, it enters the body via the lymphatic system.  A feeling of warmth immediately follows. The face, skin and core of the body will feel a heat within. The heart will beat slightly faster. Blood pressure will fall slightly. Relax into the experience. It is helpful to work with the breath: inhale and receive the medicine with love and trust, exhale and surrender. It is a common experience that the throat will gently swell, this is normal but will not swell shut. The face may also swell.  Simply relax into the sensations and allow the ally of the Kambo Spirit to purify and fortify you. After a few minutes or more, you may feel like you have to purge. You will have a bucket handy for purging and you may also need to go to the bathroom. The Kambo Practitioner will assist you in all situations. After your purge, the Kambo dots will be removed from your body and the major part of your cleanse is over. The gates are immediately covered with Dragon Blood, a natural antiseptic liquid.

The mind is often made quite clear and focused and some say they receive specific messages. Kambo works mostly to purge the body of toxins, heaviness, and dullness of body and spirit. The benefits that many report usually come in the days and weeks that follow. Many people report feeling very peaceful immediately after the treatment and often the next day one feels amazing.

Using Rapé with a Tepi
Making bead-sized pellets with the secretion

Rapé (pronounced “ha-peh”) is an optional aspect to the Kambo Ceremony

Using Rapé with a Tepi
Using Rapé with a Tepi

This is shared either right before the Kambo is administered or right after receiving the Kambo. Not all tribes use this plant medicine in combination with Kambo.

Rapé application: Rapé is the general name given to medicines that are ground into fine powder and then blown into both nostrils. Most rapés are made with tobacco and other natural plant-based ingredients. All tribes that work with Kambo use at least one type of rapé. There are other very powerful and visionary medicines that can be considered rapé, such as Yopo or Virola, which contain tryptamines.

We often offer and recommend rapé during Kambo ceremonies on different occasions in order to trigger or deepen the purge and to discharge all the toxins that the organs release when it is not happening by itself.  We also offer it when we think there is more to purge.

I have been working exclusively with rapé from tribes that is prepared with lots of prayers, respect and lots of focused attention and intention to be a helpful medicine. This medicine is composed of sacred tobacco and the ashes of a tree known as tsunú, which is considered to be one of the most used trees as a remedy for many ailments.

You can buy many different types from my store.
Rapé can help in many ways and the spirit of this grandfather assists us by helping us to move the energy that is blocked or when we feel stuck during the ceremony with Kambo.

After Care of Burn Points

When the points begin to heal, try not to remove the scabs or scratch, as this might lead to longer-term or permanent scarring.  If they itch, you can apply some aloe vera, which will also help the scabs dry out sooner.  I prefer to only use Dragon’s Blood which I apply to my points every couple of days until they are fully healed.  You can buy it at many health foods stores and online here: Dragon Blood (Sangre de Grado).

Try to keep the area dry, except for bathing / showering.  Keep abrasive clothing fabrics away from the area for about one week. The small burns will usually heal and fade with time, though it is important to understand that some types of skin will continue to show small dots months later.  Many people see their Kambo scars as a badge of honour for going through this warrior medicine.

Kambo Exceptions and Contraindications

Kambo has no known detrimental side effects.

When responsibly administered is completely safe.

Below is a list of contraindications which if a person has had or currently has should NOT take Kambo (this is not an exhaustive list).

  • Taken Bufo/5MeO-DMT within 8 weeks.

Oesophagus Rupture

Since Kambo can cause violent vomiting, we need to have some caution around certain conditions that could weaken the oesophagus.  These do not necessarily preclude you from experiencing Kambo, but it is advisable to make sure to let me know if you have been affected with anything that could have weakened your oesophagus.

Also note there are NO psychoactive compounds in Kambo medicine and is legal in most countries - check your before using Kambo.

What is Dry Kambo?

There is another way to apply Kambo which is without the use of water.  This method was developed a few years ago.

During a dry Kambo session, only two gates are made on the client and a smaller amount of Kambo is placed on each gate. The technique is to introduce enough Kambo into the body to help the recipient feel extremely relaxed but not to a point of purging like a normal session. If applied correctly the recipient will go deeper and deeper in between worlds.  It is during this great state of relaxation that the client can process so much. The recipient might even fall asleep.

Dry Kambo is used to calm the nervous system down, remove pain, induce deep relaxation (for PTSD, drug detox etc) and also for end-of-life treatment.  It can also be used as a gentle introduction to Kambo if the person is very anxious about Kambo.

This method is gentle.  The practitioner uses his/her intuition to choose the placement of the gates by scanning the recipient's entire body in complete silence.  The client is lying down for the entire session and remain silent.

I rarely use this method as although beneficial, it does not replace a full Kambo session.

Like a normal treatment, the recipient needs to fast for 10/12 hours before the treatment. This method should only be used for one to one sessions.  Such treatment usually last a minimum of 3 hours.  The contraindications are the same as with a normal Kambo session.

Merci Christel, merci Kambo, merci l'Univers 🙂

Gavin W, Stroud, Gloucestershire

I had such a transformative experience with the Kambo medicine - facilitated by Christel. Her care and warm energy is felt so profoundly in the space. I felt held and honoured to be in process with the medicine by an experienced intuitive space holder.
Christel carries the qualities of supporting your transition and process into the healing work and encouragement to find your strength to be with your own journey and take responsibility for your own shift.
The alchemy of the held space, the energy, the medicine and the professionalism all contributed to me facilitating a big internal shift in self-belief, self-care, understanding of limiting beliefs and the purging of old stagnant energy and thought processes.
After the ceremony I felt bliss and joy, I felt fresh and renewed. A sense of power and self-belief washed over me. I felt so calm and joyful.
Much gratitude to this powerful medicine and those who choose to bring its healing power to the lives of those who feel the call to upgrade their lives and life force energy.
I highly recommend you take this journey with Christal and the Kambo medicine
Much love
